Introduction

This series of TUFLOW licence free tutorial models are aimed at new users, stepping through the process of building and running a model.

On this tutorial landing page you fill find the following resources:

  • Instructions and links to the required software installations and downloads to enable completion of the free tutorials.
  • Easy to follow links to each tutorial module.

Requirements and Downloads

Requirement Brief Description Download
TUFLOW FV The suite of tutorials use TUFLOW's flexible mesh solver TUFLOW FV. TUFLOW FV can be used to model 1D, 2D, and 3D hydrodynamics from the catchment to the coast (Rivers, lakes, estuaries, coasts and oceans). In combination with TUFLOW FV's hydrodynamic solver you can run sediment transport, advection dispersion, water quality and particle tracking. This tutorial series will guide you step-by-step on each key TUFLOW FV feature.

This tutorials do not require a TUFLOW licence.

The TUFLOW executable is provided within each tutorial dataset.
QGIS The Geographic Information System (GIS) QGIS will be used to build components of our models and review results.

It is recommended to have QGIS 3.28 or later to ensure compatibility with QGIS TUFLOW plugin latest features.

Install the QGIS TUFLOW plugin which includes numerous tools to increase workflow efficiency.

QGIS can be downloaded from Latest 64-bit version of QGIS. Please follow the installation steps for the OSGeo4W Network Installer.

Once QGIS is installed, follow these steps for the QGIS TUFLOW Plugin Installation.

Aquaveo SMS TUFLOW FV relies on a flexible mesh comprised of triangles, quadrilateral, or a combination of triangles and quadrilaterals. The tutorials use Aquaveo SMS for mesh generation. Download the latest version of SMS via https://www.aquaveo.com/downloads-sms.

The tutorials can be completed with either a licensed version or the SMS Community Version.

Notepad++Syntax Highlighting A text editor is required for creation of the TUFLOW FV input files. This tutorial uses NotePad++.

Ideally a text editor should be able to:

  • Colour code the TUFLOW FV control files.
  • Open other files from the active control file.
  • Launch a TUFLOW FV simulation.

TUFLOW colour coding can be enabled using syntax highlighting.

Download and install the Latest 64-bit version of Notepad++.

See also TUFLOW syntax highlighting for Notepad++.

For instructions on configuring Notepad++ for TUFLOW modelling, see Notepad++ tips.

Tutorial Modules

The tutorials are presented in a number of modules. The modules have been developed to be undertaken as steps, with each module offering the opportunity to run the model and review the results. The first two modules also include steps to build the module's flexible mesh. New users are advised to undertake the modules in sequence, whilst more experienced users can skip to modules containing specific features of interest.

Some data is required in order to build and run the models. Download links to the required background model data is provided within the 'Requirements And Downloads' section of each tutorial. The download package also contains a working version of the tutorial model for you to refer to.
