To visualise particles (or use the SWAN GIS Tools) within the QGIS TUFLOW Viewer plugin, it is necessary to ensure that QGIS version 3.14 or later is used. At the current time of writing (August 2020), it is necessary to undertake a two-step installation of QGIS 3.14 using the instructions below to ensure the relevant NetCDF library is installed which allows the particle tracking Lagrangian outputs to be visualised. It is likely that NetCDF4 will be incorporated into the core installation over time and these instructions will be updated to reflect these updates.
The first step is to download QGIS from this link. Within the Download for Windows section, identify the QGIS in OSGeo4W options and select and download the OSGeo4W Network Installer (64 bit) as per the below image.
The QGIS install is to be undertaken in two stages as follows:
- Install QGIS desktop and dependency components.
- Run the installer a second time to select the NetCDF4 libraries required for particle visualisation.
Install NetCDF4 Libraries
Following successful completion of the Express Installer we are going to install some additional libraries not included in the Express Installer. To do this run the install executable a second time and in the first dialogue window choose to undertake an 'Advanced Install'
Choose a download source, most likely 'Install from Internet' and select the Root 'Install Directory', 'local package directory', 'internet connection' and 'download site'. Unless otherwise required these will most likely be kept as default settings. You will now reach the 'Select Packages' page as per the below image.
On the Select Packages page, type 'NetCDF4' into the search bar and find the python3-netcdf4 library. Make sure you choose to install the python3-netcdf4 library as shown below (or more recent) as this is required to display the particles.
Click next and the relevant packages will be downloaded, this may take a few minutes. Once complete click Finish. You are now ready to run QGIS 3.14. Please contact TUFLOW support if you have any issues viewing the particles within QGIS.
